James Black Moon Boot CocoonSome people might expect a solo album from lead guitarist from Finger Eleven to be an album of ‘Paralyzer‘ type hits and ‘One Thing‘ acoustic ballads. Well, not here. Put on your space suits and prepare for takeoff.

Knowing James’s history and hearing some of his earlier solo material, I knew that this would be an out-of-the-ordinary funk-infused interstellar-head-trip of an album, which is exactly what Moon Boot Cocoon is.  The album is part Modest Mouse and part ‘Pet Sounds’; highlighting bass progressions and spacey vocal flanger with a touch of country stomp on ‘Headlights‘. The lyrics are witty and smart with jabs and pop-culture references “A rose-colored-glasses frame of mind/don’t work on the colorblind”, “You are the headlights, I am the deer/ You looked at me and I started actin weird”.

Black played nearly every instrument on this debut LP, as you can see him rocking the bass in the ‘Man from Mars‘ music video which also literally puts Black’s head into space.

“We took every song to the moon and back, to Mars and back, and around Saturn twice,” offers Black on the album. “We went in every direction we possibly could with this music.” It certainly is an experience and I’m proud to see James push the boundaries and release such a stand-out album.
