I’m afraid that my ongoing love affair with 30 Seconds to Mars has come to an end. I was infatuated with this band the first time I heard their debut self-titled album featuring the amazing tracks like “Capricorn (A Brand New Name)” and “Edge of the Earth.” It was a great album and still a must-have on my playlists today.  I adored the band. I’ve met them a few times, got all their autographs. I was even invited to a pre-release listening party for A Beautiful Lie and hung out with the band over pizza. This Is War was a good album. Not great, but good. But this is worse than I could have imagined.

The album was produced by Jared Leto with previous collaborator Steve Lillywhite (U2, The Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel) co-producing four of the twelve tracks.

Jared says this about the new single/album:

“this is more than an evolution, it’s a brand new beginning. Creatively, we’ve gone to an
entirely new place, which is exciting, unexpected, and incredibly inspiring.”

And that they have.

I understand bands change, evolve, and it’s all part of the creative process and how they feel and the world around them. I understand that they’ve already made a spacey-rock album and would rather try something new and different than revisit familiar ground. But I wouldn’t have expected them to pull a full-on ‘Linkin Park’ on their new single.  Have they replaced Shannon with a f░░ing drum machine and their guitars for synth pads? ::Sigh:: It’s a shame. I was so hopeful.

Now, the artwork….

The press release explains the artwork:

The album cover features “Isonicotinic Acid Ethyl Ester” (2010 – 2011) from internationally renowned artist Damien Hirst’s Spot Paintings series. A second Hirst work, which is from the Colour Charts series, will appear on the CD itself.

Sorry to be insensitive to the art community, but really? Polka-dots?
