This report from HitFix.com:

Four filmographers taped around 3,500 hours of Leto and his band
Thirty Seconds to Mars as the rock outfit completed its latest album
“This Is War” in 2008 and 2009. A final product, to be culled from
those videos, will be released as a documentary film, “Artifact.”

Leto hopes that the film is a literal artifact of a specific time,
of the band, of his personal life, and “really what was happening with
the entire world.

The band hosted a teaser at ‘The Hive’ on Feb 4th 2010. Which got a lot of attention, and even a bomb scare. The dvd should document the band 4 year journey between ‘A Beautiful Lie’ and ‘This Is War’, as well as segments that capture the state of the world and bring awareness about the state of the world.

2012 UPDATE—

Artifact is set to be shown at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

Here’s a description from the Festival’s website:

“Telling harsh truths about the modern music business, Artifact gives intimate access to singer/actor Jared Leto and his band Thirty Seconds to Mars as they battle their label in a brutal lawsuit and record their album This Is War. The film is a true artifact of our times, as its subjects struggle with big questions over art, money and integrity.”

The schedule for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival will be announced August 31.
